    Notes
    • Donald Lee Morris of Gauley Bridge died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on February 3, 2012, after a very courageous nine-year battle with cancer. He was a devoted son and a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Born on February 18, 1931, in Glen Ferris, he was the son of the late Edgar C. Morris and Evelyn Fugate Morris. He later moved to Scrabble Creek with his parents in 1938. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Ezelle Ramsey Morris; brother, William Hansford Morris; infant granddaughter, Morris; and his great-grandson, Alexander Thomas Mitchell. Donald strongly believed in the value of hard work and had his first job at the Gauley Bridge Texaco station while he was still a student at Gauley Bridge High School. After his high school graduation in 1949, he went to work for the Union Carbide Alloy Plant. In 1951 he married Mary Helen Cogar and then in 1954, he purchased land on Scrabble Creek, where he built a home for his growing family. In 1963, he joined the Food Machinery Corporation as a certified welder. In 1964, he went on to study industrial arts and teaching at West Virginia Institute of Technology. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1968 and taught briefly for Columbus Public Schools and then returned to Gauley Bridge, where he served his community as an industrial arts teacher at Gauley Bridge High School until his retirement in 1989. After retirement, he continued to enjoy woodworking, gardening, blue grass music, and spending time in the garage fixing anything and everything. In August of 1949 he became an active member of the Gauley Bridge Baptist Church. For many years, he taught the Men's Fellowship Sunday school class and served as chairman of the board of trustees and chairman of the board of deacons. He was also a member of the pulpit committee and helped his wife coordinate vacation Bible school for twenty years. Donald is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Mary Helen Morris; children, Edgar (Rebecca) Morris of Gauley Bridge, Robert (Dee Ann) Morris of Simpsonville, S.C, James (Tamera) Morris of Conway, S.C, and Mary (Robert) Scott of Gauley Bridge; grandchildren, Ashley (John) Sagona, Jennifer (Nathan) Mitchell, Edgar (Terri) Morris, Elizabeth (Nathan) Ball, Bradley Morris, Matthew (Cody) Morris and Logan Scott; great-grandchildren, Jacob Sagona, Maylee Morris and Nicholas Cooper Ball; in-laws, Norma Morris of Ashland, Ky, JoAnn Vance of Sanford, N.C, Marie (Don)Walker of Ravenswood and Gerald Cogar of Ravenswood; many nieces and nephews. Donald's family would like to thank Pat Elswick, RN, and the Hospice staff, and daytime caregivers, Debbie Elswick and Gladys Kauff for the exceptional loving care they gave to him during his final days. In lieu of flowers, he requested that memorial donations be made to the Gauley Bridge Baptist Church or Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston. Funeral service will be held at noon Monday, February 6, 2012, at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. Ron George and the Rev. Craig Gee officiating.
