      Funeral services for William J. Herchenhahn, 87, of Aitkin and formerly of Milaca, were held Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the Sorenson-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin with the Rev. Lance Isaacson officiating.

      Burial was in the Spencer Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the Aitkin VFW and American Legion Posts.

      William died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003 at his home.

      He was born March 1, 1916 at Milford Center, Ohio, the son of Alfred and Caroline (Daum) Herchenhahn. He moved to his grandparentsí farm at age 3 and lived there until age 19. William then served in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Upon his discharge he moved to Marysville, Ohio and worked for Kaiser Jeep Co. in Toledo. He married Mary L. Barker on June 19, 1957 at Connorsville, Ind. They moved to Minnesota in 1963 and lived at Milaca and operated a farm with dairy and beef cattle. After operating the farm for 12 years they moved to Big Falls, Minn. and lived there for a time before moving to Aitkin in 1982. In Williamís early years he spent time prospecting for uranium and also lived in Idaho where he operated a trap line. He was a member of the D.A.V. and the Deer Hunters and Trappers Associations.

      William is survived by his wife, Mary Herchenhahn of Aitkin; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Ivan Burandt of Onamia, Cheryl and Rory Clayson of Aitkin, Carol and Gary Isaacson of St. Paul; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Diana Procy of Monroe, Mich., William and Diane Herchenhahn of New Richmond, Wis., John Herchenhahn of Moundsview, Minn.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Magdalena Hoffman of Marysville, Ohio.

      He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Elizabeth.
